School-based traineeships

School-based traineeships

Give young people an opportunity to gain valuable work experience whilst working towards gaining vocational qualifications

Club Training Australia facilitates one of the most effective School-based Traineeship programs operating in  Queensland. We currently have 130 school based trainees across Queensland and have dedicated training coordinators in Natalie Hardy and Jo-anne Maxwell.

Our involvement covers the theory, on-the-job-training and assessment of modules from Nationally Recognised Tourism, Hospitality and Events Training Package. Club Training Australia are the National Training Provider for Sizzler (Colins Food Group) and have been involved with school based training programs for many years.

Trainees usually commence in Grade 11 and have up to 24 months to complete their traineeship. However, Club Training Australia will endeavour to complete the traineeship in around 12 months. This keeps the trainee involved, allows for a mentoring process and helps to improve the completion rate for trainees.

We are proud to have a completion rate of 95% in Certificate II school-based traineeships.

One school day a week is allocated to the host employer for the Trainee to learn on-the-job skills. The Trainee can work additional hours if they wish; all hours worked contribute to their traineeship.

Trainees can enrol in Certificate II in Hospitality or Certificate III in Hospitality.

Developing relationships with local schools

By forging strong relationships with local schools, there is a ready-made stream of new staff that you can tap into. These students are young, generally unskilled in hospitality, have a good attitude and are looking for a path to present itself; just as all the employees currently working in your business once were. The main thing that venues need to know is that the state and federal governments are willing to financially assist employers who take a chance on young people through school-based traineeships. Funding and incentives may be available for school-based Certificate III in Hospitality through to Diploma of Hospitality (subject eligibility criteria). Plus, you will be providing a career pathway for young people in the local community and possibly securing potential middle-managers of the future. Club Training Australia currently operate a program that assists employers to engage school-based trainees and offer a potential long term career. Arana Leagues Club has had 54 school-based trainees complete their Certificate III in Hospitality in the past three years. This in-turn has produced qualified employees at the end of the program and potential Duty Managers for the future. Qualifications are important, but the assistance your employees get on a daily basis in learning about your business is also vital. As you can see from the below case study, each step of the way can be fully or partially funded by either the state or federal government.

Case Study

A venue decides to train new staff with the purpose of creating a more skilled and competent middle management team for the future. They decide to train Cassie; a local 16 year old high school student in a Certificate III in Hospitality and employ her in on a part-time basis both during and outside school hours.

The following is a case study of Cassie’s training timeline and the possible funding and incentives available to the venue.
